CTG Capital Will Provide two Districts in Lima with Wastewater Treatment Plants

CTG Capital, a subsidiary of CTG Clean Technologies Group Ltd. in Peru, will provide two districts of the city of Lima – Callao and Miraflores – with local wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). These projects will reduce groundwater pollution and the treated effluent will be used to irrigate municipal landscaping.

Peru is suffering from a sever water shortage and has a limited water and waste water infrastructure and water recover is central to national goals for the successful implementation of a national water usage program.

Water production on the Callao plant will start in late August 2010 and will extend over an area of 4,000 m2. The processed water will be used for irrigation of municipal parks.

The Maria Reiche Garden in Miraflores – named in honor of the famous archeologist who studied the famous Nazca shapes – overlooks the Pacific Ocean. It presently has an obsolete treatment and irrigation system that fails to meet municipal pollution requirements. The technology which will be implemented by CTG Capital in the WWTP will eliminate contamination in the water and ensure a continuous supply of clean water to irrigate the park.

The Callao plant will have a capacity of 1200 m3/day and, in a second stage of the project, the capacity will be increased to 4000 m3/day in three new installations. In Maria Reiche, the flow rate will be 600 m3/day, during the first stage, and that could be increased to 1200 m3/day to cover the Miraflores needs.

In these projects CTG will provide complete Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) programs by which CTG Capital will supply and operate these projects for a period of 30 years. The project will be implemented using aerobic MBBR technology supplied by Aqwise.

The City of Lima has discussed the possibility of increasing the number of WWTPs supplied by CTG Capital to as many as five in order to cover all green areas in the city.

CTG Israel, a CTG company Wins EUREKA Research Grant

CTG Israel, a CTG company, has been awarded a two-year R&D grant for the sum of €1 million, in the form of a bi-national program under the auspices of the Israel-Spain Eureka fund. The R&D project is based upon a research project and patented technology developed by Professor Michael Green and Professor Ori Lahav from the Department of Environmental Engineering at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. The technology has been exclusively assigned to CTG Israel under an agreement with the Technion Technology Transfer Office (T3).

CTG Israel’s research is being performed jointly with its partner in Spain, Hera, a company dealing in waste management and wastewater treatment. A first year’s research budget of NIS 1.85 million has already been approved with a grant of 40% and preliminary activities are under way in which the Technion will act as subcontractor to CTG Israel and will carry out laboratory activities and other research-related tasks.

The program involves a novel, effective, robust, and economic process for treating swine waste which combines nitrogen species removal, enhanced methane production and low cost phosphate recovery.

The project has completed laboratory testing and is presently entering an on-going pilot stage. The R&D program will bring the up-scaling to 10m3/day-size pilot plant and field testing in Israel and Spain. In the second year the plan is to reach a full scale, small size, 270m3/day working plant in Spain.

The EUREKA Executive Director Cooperation Programs for Europe on 25/6/2010 stated that CTG Israel has “obtained the EUREKA Status which indicates that the project . . . meets the high standards required for obtaining the Eureka Label.” He added “You are joining the prestigious group of about 250 Eureka projects that are granted a EUREKA label each year.”

British Petroleum, through its subsidiary BTC, Signs an Agreement with CTG PlanetTEK for Sewage Treatment Plants

The Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan Pipeline Company (BTC) has signed an agreement with CTG PlanetTEK – an international provider of wastewater treatment plants and a subsidiary of CTG, for the deployment of a sewage treatment plants on the Baku-Tiblisi-Ceyhan Crude Oil Pipeline Pumping Station at Kahramanmaras, Turkey. The pipeline is a 1,768 km long crude oil pipeline running from the Caspian Sea to the Mediterranean Sea. Four of the pumping stations are located in Turkey.

BTC is a world-class project delivering one million barrels per day to Turkey’s Mediterranean port of Ceyhan. British Petroleum’s involvement in this project ensures significant benefits to the region. By avoiding the Turkish Straits, the BTC pipeline helps relieve oil-related traffic and associated environmental risks, while creating substantial revenues for the transit countries.

BTC, working within the framework of British Petroleum’s strict environmental policies, realized the necessity for wastewater treatment plants to serve the personnel working at pumping stations. The Kahramanmaraş station is located at an altitude of approx. 1.500 m and undergoes severe winter conditions with temperatures as low as -28°C.

The CTG’s PlanetDISK® RBC easily complied with the rigid environmental standards set by British Petroleum and BTC and this was an easy choice for the pipeline’s owners.

PlanetDISK RBC is a state-of-the-art wastewater treatment unit based on proven Rotating Biological Contactor (RBC) technology. Mounted on a stainless steel shaft rotating at speeds of less than 4 RPM, the PlanetDISK RBC was deployed using a is a compact, container-based fixed film reactor system consisting of circular disks made of GPR (Glassfiber Reinforced Polyester). In order to prevent freezing, wastewater is heated via electrical heaters.

With approximately 40% of the disks immersed in wastewater during rotation, biomass on disks is exposed to oxygen, allowing organisms to multiply. The dissolved oxygen and organic materials in the wastewater diffuse into the biomass to be metabolized. Sludge is removed using a lamella type settler and a vacuum truck removes the waste monthly. The effluent from the lamella separator is further filtered via a sand filter and disinfected via a UV lamp.

The RBC technology is modular, where one unit has a capacity of 20 m3/day and serves around 100 employees at the station. The basic advantage of this technology is the advanced fixed film biological process based on attached growth culture of biomass. This technology both reduces the reactor volume as well as the retention time. It consumes less energy compared to conventional activated sludge process without generating any noise. Another superior advantage is that the minimum service requirement making the operator’s life easier at elevations of 1,500m.

The Extremadura Regional Government in Spain Signs an Agreement with CTG in the Fields of Water and Wastewater Technologies

Clean Technologies Group Ltd., through its Spanish subsidiary, CTG Integra, signed an agreement with the government of Extremadura to establish a framework for collaboration in the fields of water and wastewater technologies.

The region of Extremadura is striving to boost its capacity in the development and deployment of wastewater treatment plants, technologies for water purification, and related areas. CTG Integra will cooperate with local companies involved in the development of environmental solutions for water and wastewater management through the transfer and expansion of knowledge and knowhow in the field.

María Dolores Aguilar, the second vice president and Minister of the Economy, Trade and Innovation of Extremadura, said that CTG and the local companies will serve as strategic partners to Extremadura in the development of technologies for water management. She stressed that these technologies, which have been deployed successfully in Israel, can – with the appropriate transfer of knowhow – be produced by companies in Extremadura.

Extremadura will expand its capabilities for technological development in the fields of wastewater treatment plants, technologies for water decontamination, the treatment of contaminated ecosystems, and the efficient utilization of such water in agricultural processes.

Other area of cooperation between Extremadura and CTG will include advanced water treatment technologies and water reuse optimization, drinking water treatment, development of new technological processes for treatment and wastewater management, agricultural and agro-technologies and energy recovery from organic waste.

CTG Integra will also initiate direct collaboration with the Extremadura Regional Government in two areas. CTG will transfer knowledge and proprietary technologies to be used for manufacturing purposes by the government of Extremadura, and CTG will initiate several research projects within the realm of water management, working directly with institutions, technology centers, and the University of Extremadura.

To this end, CTG Integra will relocate its headquarters to the Extremadura Spanish Science and Technology Park in Badajoz and thus be situated in close proximity to companies and institutions involved in research related to water processing. Furthermore, CTG and CTG Integra will cooperate with the government of Extremadura in the establishment of the proposed the Water Research Center in Extremadura.

Water resources are strategic for the economic development and sustainability of Extremadura and its natural ecosystems. Ms Aguilar thus launched the Water Research Center which is planned to be a comprehensive framework for research into a broad spectrum of areas related to water, such as management and utilization of water resources in the community, sustainability of the rich aquatic ecosystems in the area, development of technologies for the management and treatment of drinking water, and agricultural and industrial use of recycled water.
